Trekking life without Dad
By ANTONETTE VALDEZ–PUA
Growing up in a home that lacks the presence of a father is never easy for individuals who are faced with this tough challenge in life. While some continue to ponder on what led to the separation of their parents, others have accepted the situation wholeheartedly as though they’ve seen the rough draft of their lives before it was finalized by God.
StarStruck 3’s first princess, Iwa Moto, is one of those people who didn’t grow up with a complete set of parents. Only three when her parents separated and her father fled to Japan, Iwa admits she was confused at first as to why her family had to be torn apart. However, after her mother patiently explained to her why certain things had to happen in their life, she eventually understood her parents’ situation.
"At first I was angry at my dad for leaving us but because my mother was always there to talk to me, I realized everything happens for a reason. Iniisip ko na lang lagi kung hindi nangyari yun, wala ako sa showbiz ngayon," shares 17–year–old Iwa whose new show on QTV–11 entitled "Posh," starts airing this coming week.
Iwa did not see her father for nine long years until he surprised her on her 12th birthday by coming home to the Philippines to greet her. On that particular occasion, Iwa recalls that she was the happiest girl in the world because after the long wait, her family was finally reunited. Even just for a day.
"Kahit matagal kami hindi nagkita, I didn’t have the slightest feeling of anger for him. I was so happy because I really missed him. Tapos sinama pa niya ang brother ko na nasa Japan at nag–swimming kami. Sobrang saya ko noon kasi kahit broken family na kami, that very moment I felt we were complete," she enthuses.
Now, it’s been a year since Iwa had last seen her dad and she’s hoping that the years of his absence will neither be added nor multiplied because she misses him so much. Unfortunately, she is also aware of how busy her dad is at work thus coming home to see her would be impossible for him, says Iwa.
"I know how busy he is kaya kung di siya makapunta dito, ako na lang ang pupunta sa kanya as soon as my schedule permits. Kahit one week lang ako doon na kasama siya, masaya na ako," she expresses.
Admitting that her father is not aware of everything that’s currently happening to her, except that she is already in showbusiness, Iwa believes that they have a lot to talk about as soon as they see each other.
"I don’t think he knows na kasama ako sa final four ng Starstruck kasi the last time we spoke was during the Starstruck homecoming kaya medyo matagal na iyon. Today, I plan to call him and greet him Happy Father’s Day. Actually marami akong babatiin ngayon, people close to my heart and those who treat me like their own daughter. One of them is my stepdad. Masuwerte ako kasi dalawa ang papa ko — yung nasa Japan and the one in Davao," she quips.
Even though she could have the slightest tone of seriousness in her voice as she talks of her not so ordinary life, Iwa seriously believes that no child can easily accept the separation of his parents and living with only one of them.
"Mahirap talaga ang ganitong situation, yung broken ang family mo. Pero kahit malayo ang mga fathers niyo, like mine, you can still express your love to your dads through a text message or a phone call. You don’t really have to be with your father on Father’s Day. The essence of this occasion is to make every father feel that he is special and loved by his children," Iwa ends.
Gone too soon
Lovi Poe is not looking forward to a special dinner tonight nor is she preparing flowers and a special card because the person whom she normally does these things for on Father’s Day, is no longer around.
The daughter of the late Fernando Poe, Jr. said it’s a bitter pill to swallow knowing that all your friends are in their homes celebrating and having fun with their daddies while hers has left this world already.
"Just like what I did on his birthday, I’ll be doing the same thing this Father’s Day. I’ll lit a candle for him and I’m going to the cemetery. It’s hard and sad because my dad and I always make it a point to have dinner on Father’s Day," tells 17–year–old Lovi.
Whenever the thought of her dad leaving this world too soon forms tears in her eyes, Lovi turns to the good memories which her dad had left behind.
"I have a lot of wonderful memories about my dad. But the thing I won’t forget is the fact that I could really run to him. One time, I went to this cheering competition at Araneta Coliseum but I lied to my mom. I had with me my friend’s video camera but unfortunately, I lost it at Araneta. I was crying when I called my dad to tell him about my problem. He scolded me and said I should have told the truth to my mom. The next day, he gave me money so I could buy a new video cam for my friend. He also gave me money to buy my own video cam. But before that, I was scolded big time," she recounts.
Lovi describes FPJ as a disciplinarian but a compassionate one. Her dad, says Lovi, would tell her to follow her dreams but to keep her feet firm on the ground so that she does not step on anybody along the way.
"He would always remind me to treat people nicely even if they treat me badly."
That’s a lesson that Lovi is putting into practice these days since there are people fabricating fictitious stories to ruin her relationship with FPJ’s widow, Susan Roces.
"Some would say things about Tita Susan and me to ruin our relationship but we communicate well. I text her once in a while and as long as we’re both okay, no rumor can tear us apart. I love her dearly and I respect her," states Lovi, adding that she also keeps in touch with her half brother Ronian Poe.
"That’s what my dad wants, for us to love one another. I love my brother as much as dad loves him," she says.
Apart from loving those that her dad loves, Lovi knows for a fact that he would also like to see her happy and not resigned to sadness that’s why after spending a quiet moment thinking of her dear father, Lovi goes to GMA-7's "SOP" today to make her dad proud as she launches her debut album under Sony BMG entitled ‘The Best Of My Heart." From here, she'll be proceeding to "S Files."
